Aberdeen in Aberdeenshire is a relatively unknown sparkling sensation in the upper north east of Scotland. It has been named many things, including Granite City, which is still one of its many nicknames. This particular nickname comes from the local granite that was used to erect buildings. The long sandy coastline is perfect to go for a "clearing of the mind" as the wind will make sure that you will be "cleaned up". Aberdeen was once known as a large fabricator of Textiles and paper-making, but since the 1990's the oil industry has taken over with many oil rigs located just east of Aberdeen.
The city itself is easy to reach despite its pretty remote location. The international airport in the north of the city offers flights to Scottish cities like Glasgow and Edinburgh as well as England's London, but you can also fly to countries like France, the Netherlands, Spain, Belgium, Austria, Ireland and Scandinavian countries. The railway station is very busy and offers services to the south and west of Scotland as well as a direct link to London. The Caledonian sleeper is a travel experience that needs to be undergone once in your lifetime for this purpose.
As Aberdeen has been around for a long time (data goes back to over 8000 years of settlements) there are plenty of sights to enjoy and the Provost Ross's House is the second oldest dwelling dating back to the late 1500's. The Marischal museum holds vital and important exhibits about the findings of European as well as Scottish archeologists. The Art Gallery holds a large collection of paintings, both Scottish and English, and the Maritime museum has an almost 10m high replica of an oil producing platform to marvel at. If you want to take a break from all this sightseeing you can go to the Union Terrace Gardens which offer an impressive flower display or you can visit the Duthie winter Gardens. Nothing will clear your mind though like a good sea breeze coming in off the sea.
