| Colston Bassett is an ancient settlement & quintessential English village. The history of the manor certainly dates back to the Doomsday book in 1086.THE MARKET CROSS was placed in the centre of the village on 3rd Sept 1257, when King Henry III made a grant. You can read all about the history here http://www.nottshistory.org.uk/young1942/chapter1.htm Colston Bassett Present Day has a 16th century pub & award winning restaurant. With its village post office & deli, with gourmet Café, the village school & church & beautiful cricket ground in the lea of Colston Bassett Hall, it really does live up to its name of one of the most beautiful of Englands villages. It is completely undiscovered by tourism although it is only an hour and a half from central London via the train at Grantham. If you’ve ever eaten Stilton Cheese you may be surprised to learn that it comes not from the village of Stilton but from either the Colston Bassett Stilton Dairy or one of the handful of villages within a few miles radius. Indeed it is reputed to be the favorite of the Royal family. The village is divided by a small river. The Smite and has access to the nearby Grantham Canal ideal for angling, cycling or walking along the level towpath. Nottingham is superb for nightlife & shopping (home of Sir Paul Smith) Eden Hall Day spa is a 10 min drive for the ultimate luxury relaxation and pampering. Trent Bridge Cricket international Ground is nearby too as is the British school of sky diving. |
