Ideally situated in a quiet street close to the heart of Windermere, the Applegarth makes a perfect base for discovering the Lake District.

Five minutes from the hotel you could be stepping out onto the fells, boarding a lake steamer, visiting the Windermere Steamboat Museum, or looking around the National Park Centre at Brockhole. And yet the Applegarth is only 20 minutes by car from the M6 motorway and just a few minutes from the train and bus station.

The Applegarth has all the friendliness and comfort of a family-run hotel - in a building rich with historical interest. It was originally the private residence of John Rigg, one of the most fascinating Lakeland figures of the last century.

As well as a pioneer hotelier and coachman, he was also one of the men responsible for bringing the railway to Windermere in 1847 - and so opening up the Lake District to millions of visitors from the great industrial towns of the North.

The shops and facilities of Windermere are only a minute's walk away - but a twenty minute stroll in the other direction could lead you to the tranquillity of the lake shore or the spectacular viewpoint at Orrest Head.

The Applegarth has eighteen bedrooms, all with en-suites, central heating, colour TV and tea and coffee making facilities and hairdryers. Many of the rooms also benefit from excellent views towards the Fells, with some four poster rooms.

The hotel benefits from a spacious bar and separate sun lounge leading to a beautiful conservatory restaurant. The perfect place to relax for the evening and enjoy good food and fine wines.

Roast sirloin of black Angus beef, butter roasted potato, root vegetable puree, horseradish cream and a rich beef gravy

Warm Applegarth sticky toffee pudding served with a hot fudge sauce and double cream
