EATING OUT

There are a good many restaurants, pubs and cafes in Tunbridge Wells with some particularly exellent old pubs in the nearby countryside. Menus range from the uniquely English, to specialists in fish, a full range of ethnic styles, to top class continental.

If you are arriving on a Friday or Saturday it is advisable to book ahead as it is very difficult to get a table at short notice in many of the restaurants.

We keep copies of most of the menus and would be happy to make advance table reservations.

PLACES TO VISIT

Tunbridge Wells is an excellent centre from which to tour the country. Notable houses of historic interest include Penhurst Place, Knole, Hever Castle, Leeds Castle, Ightham Mote, Bodiam Castle, Winston Churchill's home Chartwell and Rudyard Kipling's home, Batemans.

Garden lovers can visit Sissinghurst Castle, Scotney Castle, Great Dixter and Pashley Manor. Canterbury makes a great day out on its own.

The ancient towns of Rye and Battle are also within easy reach and Windsor Castle is about an hour and a half's drive.

Tunbridge Wells itself is a town of considerable interest and has retained many of its pleasant open spaces close to the heart of the town while at the same time providing excellent shopping facilities, both in the older parts of the town, as well as the modern Royal Victoria Place shopping mall.

HOW TO FIND US

From the M25 going east: exit 5, indicating A21Hastings. Follow the dual carriageway until it ends near Tonbridge. Continue towards Hastings. After about two miles the dual carriageway resumes at a roundabout. Continue for about a mile and take first exit, marked Pembury, and pick up A264 into Tunbridge Wells town centre. Continue for about a mile and a half until reaching traffic lights at theSalvation Army Hall crossroads. Straight over into Prospect Road, which will turn sharp right and then first, left into Claremont Road. Stay with this, passing a small park on the right, then Miles Garage. Claremont now becomes Mount Sion and turns sharp right. Eden Road is the next on the left. We have ample off street parking.

From the South - Lewes, A26 and Frant A267 or from the West, East Grinstead (also Gatwick alternate route) A264. Approaching from Lewes A26 the road will pass under a railway bridge on the outskirts and then a garden centre and onwards to a roundabout. Over to the next roundabout by the Swan Hotel garage. Straight over to the next roundabout, by Barclays Bank on the right. Straight over.

From East Grinstead A264 the road comes in via Langton Green on the outskirts of Tunbridge Wells, past a cricket ground and on towards the Spa Hotel. Turn right off the mini roundabout by the Spa and down Major Yorks Road. Exit left at the roundabout, joining the Lewes road A26. On to the next roundabout by Barclays Bank Straight over.

From Frant the A267 arrives at the same Barclays Bank roundabout, but it will be on the left. Exit right. After the Barclays Bank roundabout prepare to exit right into the High Street. Road markings for a right turn. Shop on corner - Crown Electric. Enter High Street and almost immediately prepare to cross traffic to come up Mount Sion. Landmark building in front is Pizza Express (formerly NatWest). Leave P. Express on your left. Eden Road is at the top of Mount Sion on the right. Street name slightly wrongly angled.
