Shropshire is far and away one of the most rural parts of England. This isn't to say that the county is particularly poor or destitute but the fact remains that Shropshire definitely has its fair share of pastures. In truth, though, many of the residents of the quaint villages that make up Shropshire in fact prefer the sparse population of their towns and the quiet and peace that it brings. Large cities bring problems like pollution and crime and such misfortunes would be truly detrimental in an area as beautiful as Shropshire. Much of the land that the county makes up is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Shropshire Hills in particular are immensely popular to purveyors of natural wonder. The residents of towns like Bishop's Castle generally feel that maintaining the beauty of their landscape is far more advantageous to the future than laying down strip malls and roadways across the gorgeous scenery. We use Bishop's Castle as an example because it is the smallest town in Shropshire and thus suits our purposes perfectly. Bishop's Castle has less than two thousand residents and hardly registers as a blip in a GPS but the town is in fact one of the most unique, fascinating, and entertaining towns in the entire United Kingdom.

Bishop's Castle, though incredibly old, is one of the most popular hot spots for the young alternative community throughout England. Over five premier music venues can be found in this small village and all are lauded throughout the county for the fantastic indie performers that regularly come and play sets for the adoring community. After every Carnival Bishop's Castle hosts an immensely popular Beer Festival that only enhances the popularity with the young crowds and on days like this one can truly get the sense that Bishop's Castle is something of a college town transported several centuries back in the past. Though there is a community college in Bishop's Castle, it is more of a high school that has a population of less than three hundred. This is the anomaly of Bishop's Castle: It has a confident grip on the pulse of today's youth despite the fact that it should theoretically only appeal to staid history buffs holding dusty old tomes.

To be fair, the fascinating history of the town is the kind of things historians dream about. Bishop's Castle dates back to Norman times and many of the relics from those days can be found in Bishop's Castle in relatively good condition. The town was in fact once a part of Wales and a part of England at the same time and many territorial disputes arose that can fill countless books by dedicated fans of these struggles. As such, many historians do in fact flock in droves to Bishop's Castle but they in fact are rather like the young crowds that come to the city for the night life; though their aims are different, their goals are the same: To derive pleasure while in the confines of the Castle. That is something that we can all get behind.
