One of the most heavily visited cities is Bourton on the Water whose charm can not be dwarfed by the scores of summer visitors it gets each year. Gently flowing through its center is the River Windrush that is a big part of the village's charm. The peaceful waterway Windrush is not much more that a shallow brooks the flows a gentle speed. There are three low stone bridges for people to walk across and two other bridges designed to handle vehicles.

The classic look of Bourton is widely used on postcards and calendars by professional photographers. The most popular view is looking up river at one of the Cotswold stone bridges. The waterway and the city are so woven together that Bourton is referred to as the Venice of Cotswolds. The cottages of Bourton are also constructed of Cotswold stone and this stone is what adds to their charm as well as the shops.

For a small village there are many shops that hold anything from souvenirs to upscale antique shops that cater to international clients. The residences of Bourton have worked hard to give their village a calm atmosphere of beauty. There are containers of flowers at every building and hanging from the posts. Expansive grassy lawns sprawl all the way to the edge of the river where many willows droop over the water. Bourton had purposely built many attractions to get tourist to spend more money in the village. There is a motors museum, a model village, a pottery and a perfumery to name just a few.

.

The history of Bourton begins in the pre-Roman era. At one time over 60 acres just north east of the village was a Celtic military camp. There is evidence that the camp had people in it as far back as 400 BC. The camp was taken over by the Romans for a short time but they eventually moved the camp closer to the Windrush River. They then built the Fosse Way nearby which is a Roman road that was constructed through Bourton as it came from Devon to Humber.
