The lovely town of Bradford-on-Avon, in the historically gorgeous county of Wiltshire, has a population that just barely tops itself out over ten thousand. Despite this, the town is in fact much busier than it would first appear due to the fact that Bradford-on-Avon enjoys year round tourism. This is largely because of the fact that Bradford-on-Avon has a history that dates all the way back to the days of the Roman Empire and, throughout the years, the town has amassed a wide array of fascinating relics and monuments from countless centuries. It also helps that the area that Bradford-on-Avon finds itself in is filled to the brim with examples of natural beauty as opposed to the man made variety.
The River Avon is one of the most beautiful and impressive bodies of water in the entire United Kingdom. Nearly every swath of land that comes into contact with this ancient flowing treasure is endowed with a bit of the stately wonder of the Avon. Stratford is perhaps one of the most famous towns that brush this esteemed river and much of the fame has to do with the fact that none other than William Shakespeare was born in the hamlet. While Bradford-on-Avon can't beat Stratford in terms of famous bards, Bradford does sit comfortably on the incredibly gorgeous Avon Valley and this alone helps Bradford to claim bragging rights in terms of beauty. Bradford is also very near the Cotswold Hills. The Cotswold is of course one of England's most beloved treasures and countless visitors come to these scenic wonders to hike, fish, and generally lay eyes on the sights.
Bath is also very near Bradford-on-Avon and the stones used to build much of each town were largely taken from the Jurassic Stone that is found around the area that both towns share. It is this stone that truly shows us just how old the area of Bradford-on-Avon and its surroundings is (though the Cotswold is also home to some fascinating relics). All around Bradford and under its earth are fossils from civilizations long since dead and many fossils in fact date even further back. It is little wonder, then, that places near Bradford are actually the sites under which dinosaur fossils were found. This too helps in making Bradford-on-Avon one of the most popular tourist destinations for people who are interested in science and nature. Aside from the beauty of the area, many people come to Bradford simply to enjoy learning more about anthropology, archeology, and paleontology, among other exciting pursuits.
Though not all of Bradford-on-Avon's treasures have been revealed. Those not wishing to dig can marvel at the ruins of the ancient Roman fort that once stood on Bradford. You needn't be a history buff to enjoy the town, though. All around Bradford are exciting sights for even the most cynical and discerning of viewers. If, however, you do visit Bradford without the pretensions of learning about history, you may be surprised to find yourself a new found fan of the past after laying eyes on the rich history visible through Bradford's surroundings.
