Other accommodation near Cardigan

Where the county of Ceredigion meets Pembrokeshire, alongside the famed River Teifi, one can find the quaint and charming burg of Cardigan. Don't let the city's meager population of five thousand or so citizens fool you, however; Cardigan is by no means a "small town" and despite its size the city is an indispensable part of the region, offering amenities more common with major cities including a hospital, a movie theater, a modern art center, and a college. Evidence shows that there are to be even more exciting offerings in Cardigan in the next few years, as the city has approved a widespread plan to refurbish the exteriors of many of the classic buildings in the market center of the town while adding new areas like a civic center and landing stage.

It is little wonder why some of Cardigan's buildings may need some enhancement, considering the fact that the city has been around for nearly a thousand years. While under Norman control during the 1000s and 1100s, the famed Cardigan Castle was built and it was subject to some particularly dangerous skirmishes during those times as opposing forces stormed the city in an attempt to take it over. The city's strategic importance was largely the reason for the high incidence of attacks. Its location on the Teifi has made Cardigan an indispensable port town for the better part of its life and during the Elizabethan Era it was considered the most important port location in all of Wales. Five shipyards produced over two hundred ships during the port's peak in the 19th century and over a thousand workers were under the employment of the hundreds of ships that came in and out of Cardigan.

Though the port is no longer the powerhouse that it once was, shipping is still a big industry in Cardigan although most of the people that visit the city to see the port do so because of an interest in the storied history of the area more than for a primer on shipping commerce in the twenty-first century. The city's old age makes it a popular draw for anyone interested in the past and the biggest attraction is not the port but in fact Cardigan Castle. Unfortunately, the castle has had multiple owners over the past several centuries and few of them took pains to ensure its integrity. As a result, the once glorious Cardigan Castle is a shadow of its former self, having fallen into disrepair and neglect. All the same, Cardigan Castle is still an impressive relic despite its extreme weathering and countless people nonetheless flock to Cardigan in order to behold this behemoth in all its glory. Cardigan has stood on this earth for ages untold and it is still an essential part of Wales. Still, one can't help but feel some sympathy for the castle that has been a part of the city ever since its inception. The refurbishing of the shopping district in Cardigan is admirable but hopefully the city will come to its senses and enact similar plans to re-enliven Cardigan Castle as well.
