Built in 1438 this hotel has for centuries stood between the tranquil haven of the Cathedral and its Precincts and the jostling commerce of the city centre. The site is recorded from Saxon times and linkage with the Cathedral over a millenium.
In medieval times the inn was called the "Sonne Hospice" and became one of the original English tea houses and subject to Dickenson reference - later the name moved to an inn in neighbouring Sun Street.

On the Cathedral side several rooms directly overlook the South Porch and the main West Entrance across the Precints lawns. On the city side, the hotel adjoins the Christchurch Gateway, entrance to the Precincts, and overlooks the Buttermarket and Burgate (semi-pedestrianised).
Most of Canterbury's premium shops are to be found here; famous names from London's West End.
All the rooms bespeak their medieval construction; from sloping floors to massive oak beams and winding corridors. Furnishings and services are, however, recent and of a high standard; the aim is a pleasing and restful base from which to explore this most ancient and charming of English cathedral cities.
Interior

All rooms have hand basins with hot and cold water, television, tea and coffee making facilities, direct dial telephone, and central heating. Premium rooms additionally boast a full range of creature comforts (en-suite bath/shower rooms, television, hairdryer).
We can recommend a long term car park with security cameras about 7 minutes from the Hotel. Reception/bar lounge, Precincts reading room, baby listening service, we offer dinner and snacks, packed lunches (for Groups by arrangment). Coach parties by prior arrangement. Dinner served from 7 - 9pm (last orders by 8pm).
