Chapel House Bed and Breakfast, Plymouth

Chapel House is a truly fascinating and unique residence situated within the heart of the popular and ancient village of Plympton St Maurice. This important property has a huge historical significance with the original structure being a Medieval Hall House, which was arranged on two floors. Dendrochronology dating has shown that the timbers and beams date back to between 1460 and 1480. Indeed the property has such archaeological and historical relevance that it was significantly featured in the popular television programme "Time Team" which visited St Maurice in 1998.

The main feature is the Medieval Dining Hall, which is one of only three in the South West, having an arched brace roof with the 15th century oak beams. Specialist lime plaster had to be used in the construction of the ceiling in order to preserve the oak timber.

The accommodation comprises, on the ground floor, bedroom and a shower room/W.C. The impressive "Douglas Fir" pine spiral staircase rises to the first floor where there is a large 20' sitting room with a white marble mantel piece and six stripped pine folding doors which lead to the magnificent medieval dining hall, there is a delightful "country style" kitchen/breakfast room and a useful modern utility room. The spiral staircase rises again above the sitting room providing access to another bedroom which has en-suite facilities and a versatile platform bed. On the garden level are two further bedrooms, another bathroom and a study.

A careful and imaginative restoration has included the provision of a new central heating system, rewiring a "Douglas Fir" pine staircase with oak treads, "country pine" kitchen and a "Victorian Style" bathroom.

Plympton St Maurice is a popular and ancient Village which has a wonderful array of amenities including three public houses, two large public open spaces and the nearby Motte and Bailey Castle, around which the village grew in the 12th Century. The City Centre some five miles distant has easy access to both the A38/Parkway and Dartmoor.

The sheltered and secluded courtyard gardens are a delightful feature of the property and lie to the side and rear of the house. The main area has slate flag stone, raised flower beds and a pond. A timber bridge leads from the kitchen to the gardens and a stable door from the utility to the garden area. There is a coach light and a splendid Vigina Creeper. The rear courtyard area is completely secluded, enjoys the afternoon sun and has a flowerbed and brick and pebbled areas.
