Coventry in the West Midlands is the 9th largest city in England and the 11th largest in the UK. It has over 310000 residents. It follows behind Birmingham but just in front of nearby Leicester in population rankings. A fun fact about Coventry is that it was the first ever "twinned" city in the world, twinning with Volgograd in Russia as support for the Russian troops during the Battle of Volgograd.
Being only 150km from London and 30km from Birmingham it is perfectly located for day trips. Every major town or city is easily reached with train/car or bus and Birmingham airport is less than 30min away by car. Coventry is the English city furthest away from any beach.
St Michael's Cathedral is probably Coventry's most visited landmark. The 14th century building was nearly completely destroyed by German bombings during the second world war with only the spire and the outer wall left standing. St Michael now has a statue at the entrance of the new cathedral which was completed in 1962. The spire of the old Cathedral still is a landmark in Coventry as it forms part of the "three spires" together with the spires of the Christ church (de functional) and the holy Trinity Church (still in operation). An amazing sight is the Transport museum, which is free to enter for the public. It houses the largest collection of British road cars and includes the record breaking cars Thrust2 and ThrustSSC. If speed is not your thing you can have a look at The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is a major art gallery in the city centre. About four miles from the city centre and just outside Coventry in Baginton is the Lunt Fort, a reconstructed Roman fort. The Midland Air Museum is situated just within the perimeter of Coventry on land adjacent to Coventry Airport and near Baginton.
Coventry was host to the filming of the Mini Cooper Scene in "the Italian Job" movie where the cars drove through the sewer pipes. Another famous TV series filmed here is "keeping up appearances" (Bouqueeeeeee residence...lady of the house speaking)
