A brief history
Originally known as the Custom House Coffee House, this fantastic building developed into a public house some time in early 1823 because it was believed that alcoholical beverages where being served.
The original entrance to the building was on Grape Lane, the frontage that we see today on Bridge Street is due to the demolition of shops and the widening of the road, which now leaves a wide pavement area outside the present entrance.
Raffled Anchor was the next building along Grape Lane and was also a public house, although the present pub has a room named the Raffled Anchor we have no known connections to the Raffled Anchor which was demolished along with the original Tin Ghaut (T'inne Ghaut) which was also situated here.
Rebuilt in 1912 to its present form it now stands beautifully within its surounding environment of Whitby.
