Other accommodation near East Grinstead

Lying just twenty-seven miles south of London and twenty-one miles north of Brighton, East Grinstead sits among one of the busiest areas of England. Despite this placement, the city enjoys a comparatively modest population of twenty four thousand people. Fortunately, this is in no way indicative of the many people who come to visit East Grinstead each day in order to lay eyes on the beautiful and often very old architecture that can be found throughout the city limits.

East Grinstead's High Street is no doubt the most notable area in the city, due largely to the fact that it contains the longest continuous run of 14th Century timber framed buildings in the entire United Kingdom. Ashdown Forest is also a major attraction to tourists, as much for its scenic beauty as for the fact that it served as the inspiration for A.A. Milne's Hundred Acre Wood and Winnie the Pooh stories. Near the forest is the famed St. Swithun's Church. This historic building, set atop the highest point of the town, has a tower dating back to the late 1700s and a graveyard with the body of John Mason Neale within its earth.

East Grinstead is also fortunate enough to have one of the most eclectic varieties of churches in all of England. St. Mary's, the Anglican Church, dates back to the middle 1800s. Many Roman Catholic churches adorn the city as well as Protestant cathedrals like West Street's Baptist Chapel. Lately, however, many new churches have been erected in East Grinstead and they have further cemented the city's reputation for religious freedom. London Road is home to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. The Mormon London England Temple is also found in East Grinstead, making the borough one of the most important Mormon locations in all of England. More divisively, the famed Church of Scientology in the UK also calls East Grinstead home. This site in Saint Hill Manor was bought by none other than Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard in 1959. The building served as the world headquarters for Scientology all the way up through the 1970s and it is still among the most important areas on Earth for the religion.

Sadly, some of East Grinstead's most incredible architecture and scenery were forever destroyed during World War II. Germany bombed the city multiple times during the war and one particularly devastating attack took place on July 9th, 1943. A bomb dropped by a German plane struck High Street's Whitehall Cinema. Many children lost their lives that night and 108 people totally perished as a result of the attack. These days, however, the citizens of East Grinstead enjoy a largely peaceful existence. The crime levels in the city are lower than the national average and, despite the vast array of religions and beliefs to be found, the people share a generally happy cohabitation. Though East Grinstead is no doubt more well-known because of its architecture and historic edifices.
