Set deep in the rolling West Sussex countryside, Eaton Thorne House - parts of which date back to the 15th century - is the home of your hosts Nan and John Langhorne. They invite you to make it your home away from home too, for your stay in one of the loveliest corners of England. The house has been in the family since the 1950's, and Nan and John have lived here since 1980. As well as the house itself, Eaton Thorne boasts well-equipped livery stables and outdoor riding school, and some nine acres of land, most of which is pasture and playground for resident and visiting horses.
But you don't have to ride to be able to enjoy all that Eaton Thorne has to offer: for peace and quiet the location is unrivalled, and the house looks out to the rear over the Sussex Downs, which are an easy and very short drive away. Thousands of square miles of unspoiled Downland with many miles of public footpath offering outstanding views over the surrounding scenery await the Downland rambler.
In addition, some of the local hillsides are a magnet for hang gliding and paragliding enthusiasts with some of the best soaring in the country to be found here. And if you don't want to drive far for an evening meal, there's an excellent pub/restaurant supper to be had 100 metres away!
Eaton Thorne is also convenient for many local beauty spots and attractions, and offer an ideal location from which to explore some of the area's riches: Ten minutes drive away is the remarkable Leonardslee Gardens, spectacular at any time of the year but especially so during May and June, when the hundreds of Azaleas and Rhododendrons burst out in a dazzling display of colour.
The vibrant and bustling town of Brighton is also close by, offering fine dining, Regency architecture, nightlife for all tastes and a shopping experience considered by many to be second only to London in its eclectic selection of arcades and boutiques, as seen for example in the famous "Lanes".
Some of the local hillsides are a magnet for hang-gliding and paragliding enthusiasts, with some of the best soaring in the country to be found here. A variety of country houses and castles is within easy reach, such as Parham House and its parkland grounds, and Arundel Castle, one of the most imposing and impressive examples in the South of England. The walk to the top of the keep is well worth the view! The town of Arundel itself is also worth strolling through, with some quaint coffee shops and lots of antique and curio shops.
The All England Jumping Course at Hickstead, one of the homes of English showjumping, is a five minute drive away. Also within convenient driving distance is “Glorious Goodwood”, home of the Duke and Duchess of Norfolk, and famous for vintage motor racing and for one of the most beautiful horse racing courses in the world. So far, we’ve barely scratched the surface, so - as you can see - there’s no shortage of things to do. Don’t forget, too, that London is only an hour by direct rail link from our nearest station, and Gatwick Airport is just 30 minutes away. So why not make us your base for your stay in one of England’s most beautiful counties? “you’re welcome!”
