Built in 1884 with a large wine cellar as a family house for a naval officer of the time, with lawn tennis courts in the grounds where Grosvenor Lodge now stands.
The house was used to entertain many famous people including stage personalities until the turn of the century, when it became the property of the Erolini family. They commissioned the fascinating stained glass window on the newel landing, showing a sailing ship under full sail, kangaroo and enu, to remind them of their time in Australia. Later, one of the Ercolini brothers went on to become famous in the furniture business.
In 1935, a Woodford Bank manager acquired the property and with the help of his wife, ran the Stebonheath Guest House there, building an eight bedroom extension in 1938. During the Second World War Stebonheath played its part in housing troops who manned a searchlight unit in Woodford.
After the Great War, the Guest House was sold to the Stanton family, who later retired to Spain in 1971 selling the building to a local Estate Agent.
In 1977, Steonheath was bought and refurbished by its present owners and named the Grove Hill Hotel as it is know today.
