The town of Hawes is one of the most refreshing and breathtaking places in all of England and it can be seen as something of an anomaly when compared to some of its neighbors in North Yorkshire. Though North Yorkshire is home to some beautiful natural scenery, many parts of the county are often accused of being overdeveloped or otherwise not conducive to scenic beauty. Hawes, on the other hand, has a meager population of just over a thousand people and thus is not subject to overdeveloping or any other man made scourges.
Much of the beauty of Hawes has to do with the fact that the lovely River Ures runs right through the town. This bountiful body of water endows the city with a stately appearance that allows nearly every nook and cranny of Hawes to take on a postcard-worthy visage. What truly makes the town so stunning, however, is the fact that it is the entryway to one of England's most incredible natural treasures: The Yorkshire Dales. The Yorkshire Dales has been a national park for over fifty years and thankfully it has been preserved to keep its incredibly pristine and breathtaking appearance. Many people come to Hawes each year in order to sleep there at night and then explore the wondrous Dales all day. One can spend a lifetime in this area and still be floored by the many river valleys and hills that can be found everywhere you look. Thus, Hawes and the Yorkshire Dales are indelibly intertwined and, at least as far as North Yorkshire is concerned, the relationship between these beautiful bits of earth can't be stressed enough.
Hawes is more than just a gateway to one of the most stunning natural locations in the nation, though. The town itself has plenty of incredible aspects to it and one of the most notable is the fact that it is the home of the nationally beloved Wensleydale cheese. Wensleydale cheese is one of the most sought after specialty cheeses in the world and it is only in Hawes that it is made. There are many different variations of Wensleydale cheese and some are harder than others while others are spicier than others. At any rate, the cheese reached an even higher popularity when the popular claymation series "Wallace and Gromit" began to mention Wensleydale cheese here and there. From then on the venerable cheese has maintained a level of popularity that makes it the envy of all other cheeses. If you don't like cheese, though, you can find plenty else to love in Hawes including the Dales Museum or Great Shunner Fell, one of the most beautiful hills in England. Essentially, you can be sure that your trip to the Yorkshire Dales will be even further enhanced if you make sure that it is Hawes in which you begin your adventure. Though North Yorkshire is home to some downright stunning environments, Hawes takes the cake with a fervor that simply can't be beaten.
