Holt is one of many gorgeous little burgs situated around the county of Norfolk. While some of these towns, like Norwich and Cromer, tend to blend together in a rather generic fashion, there is no end to the charming beauty and quaint fun of a night spent in Holt. Though the land that Holt sprung up from has been inhabited since ancient times, the town still maintains a wonderfully current attitude and a fresh outlook on the world. Normally the traits would be exclusive to one another but Holt has managed to effortlessly blend the old and the new in many exciting ways. New age festivals and Dr. Who conventions are set amidst ancient abbeys and medieval market squares in this part of town and the juxtaposition only adds to the excitement and wonder of such events.

Sadly, not all of Holt's phenomenal architecture made it to the present unscathed. In May 1708 one of the most devastating fires ever to hit Norfolk nearly destroyed Holt entirely. It is said that the entire medieval part of the town burned to the ground within three minutes and, by looking at similar structures that remain in nearby cities, this is a frighteningly believable assumption. The church only barely escaped somewhat intact and its gorgeous thatched roof naturally went up in blazes almost immediately. It is also rumored that the lead used in crafting the windows of the church melted in the fire and likely dripped boiling hot lead onto the mortified inhabitants below. To make matters worse, Holt at that time was a popular town for butchers to sell their fresh cuts of meat and there were quite a few butchers in town at the time of the fire. According to legend, most of the butchers were forced to flee the town and leave all of their meat behind. Aside from nearly bankrupting many of these merchants, it is believed that the burning town had a sweet and salty pork smell that haunted the nightmares of many a survivor in the years that followed.

This morbid story aside, Holt is without a doubt a town filled to the brim with gorgeous Georgian architecture dating back centuries and stone buildings dating back to Saxon inhabitation. Curiously, this setting seems to have suited the younger generations rather nicely and as such Holt is home to many youth-oriented concerts and festivals. Art, theatre, literature, and nearly every esoteric art is cherished in Holt and the town is widely lauded by youths as the "Austin" of England. Nearly ten thousand people visited Holt to attend the most recent Dr. Who Festival and the weeklong Summer Festival regularly draws even more visitors. Rare is the city that can provide so much joy for the most recently born generations on Earth while still holding a cherished history that dates back to the dawn of England. One can only hope that the youngsters taking part in the Holt festivities are aware of how much history they are reveling in during any given rock concert.
