Huddersfield, the melting-pot market town in West Yorkshire, is a diverse city with a unified people. While many areas of England are mixed ethnically and culturally, Huddersfield is a Victorian city adorned with churches, temples, and mosques that stand together closely in much the same way as the people that walk the streets around them. With a healthy mix of British Black, Pakistani, White, and Asian, Huddersfield is a home to many different ways of life but they all manage to converge beautifully into one vibrant, beautiful outlook.
Higher education, for instance, is of special interest to the residents of Huddersfield and several sixth form colleges and schools adorn the lush landscape of the city flanked by the Rivers Colne and Holme. The University of Huddersfield is also home to notable alumni and professors like Patrick Stewart. Though varied, Huddersfield's citizens hold many of the same things in high esteem. Music, for instance, is appreciated in Huddersfield in all its many shapes and forms. The most famous choral society in the United Kingdom, the Huddersfield Choral Society, was founded in Huddersfield nearly one hundred and seventy-five years ago. Since those days, however, much has changed in the world of music and Huddersfield has been at the forefront of every major movement along the way. The city was the site of the final U.K. concert of the punk rock pioneers The Sex Pistols before their swift implosion. The influential metal band Iron Maiden also paid homage to Huddersfield in the song "The Sheriff of Huddersfield". Progressive metal has always found a healthy outlet in the city and the recent success of the band Evile owes much to the popular Thrash Metal scene in Huddersfield's many popular clubs. Many music festivals also occur each year in the city including the enormously popular Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. This raucous fest allows popular local acts to hobnob with the many international stars that top the billing. The Marsden Jazz Festival is also a huge draw and Huddersfield is frequently the site of free concerts by famed groups like The Script, Elliot Miner, and The Ordinary Boys.
Near the town's famed ringed road is a widely successful attraction that is of more interest to suburban tastes, though. The massive shopping area of Huddersfield encloses multiple malls of varying heights including the Piazza, an outdoor behemoth full of shops. The Packhorse Precinct is of huge interests to tourists but visitors and residents alive populate the busy Town Center, which boasts huge retail chains like Gamestation and HMV as well as more upscale boutiques like Marks and Spencer and Topman. Near these impressive centers are many popular bars that cater to the large college population including the Parish, which has been in business since 1720. Clearly, Huddersfield treats its citizens right, which is yet another of the many unique and worthy traits that the city is known for. A trip to Huddersfield will make you wish that every city in the world cared so much about fostering the intellectual and spiritual growth of its residents as well as providing them everything that their hearts could desire.
