Inverness is THE most northerly city in the UK. Laying on the river Ness. This is also where the name is taken from, as the literal Gaelic translation is "mouth of the river Ness". It is the fastest growing city in Europe and ranks 5th on the lists of "cities offering quality of life" in the UK. This makes them the highest ranked city in Scotland.
Inverness City Centre lies on the east bank of the river and is linked to the west side of the town by three road bridges (Ness Bridge, Friars Bridge and the Black (or Waterloo) Bridge) and by one of the town's suspension foot bridges, the Grieg Street Bridge. The traditional city centre was a triangle bounded by High Street, Church Street and Academy Street, within which Union Street and Queensgate are cross streets parallel to the High Street. Between Union Street and Queensgate is the Victorian Market, which contains a large number of small shops. The main railway station is directly opposite the entrance to the market. From this station you can easily travel to and from London, Edinburgh, Perth, Glasgow and Wick.
The local airport is 15km from the city and serves all the islands to the north and west of Scotland as well as places like Dublin, London and Edinburgh. British Airways caused a little local commotion when it sold off landing slots at Heathrow (from Inverness) because of the merger with American Airlines. This merger, however, fell apart.
Inverness is host to the Northern Meeting. The most famous and prestigious meet for Pipers from all over the world. Inverness is also host to the Inverness Highland Games. By most perceived to be the most prestigious Highland Games in the world. When visiting Inverness you should check out Inverness Castle and the Old High Church. The spires of the Inverness cathedral look strange at first sight and that is because the money ran out before they could be completed.
You might want to admire the looks of HMP Inverness, but you presumably do not want to go inside as this is the prison that serves the whole north of the country.
