The county of Northamptonshire is well known for its stately beauty and picturesque landscapes but few people know that this area has been continuously inhabited for as long as mankind has been around. There are many Paleolithic and Mesolithic relics scattered beneath this gorgeous soil untouched for millennia untold and this says nothing of the many fantastic Iron Age settlements also buried beneath eons of soil buildup. At any rate, Northamptonshire boasts some truly terrific towns for history buffs to peruse endlessly whether the aim is to gaze upon Roman walls or to role play in a real Saxon castle. The lovely town of Kettering is the perfect example of a classic Northamptonshire town. This beautiful burg on the River Ise has a long and rich history running just like the tributary of Nene to the north, breathing life and wonder into the land and its inhabitants.
Kettering watched countless Neolithic beings and their ancestors forage for food and shelter in its comforting arms and one can still see exciting remains from this wild time in our species' history. At any rate, Kettering was one of the earliest towns to arise in the Iron Age as man was first discovering this crazy idea of "civilization". These prehistoric Huck Finns began to built rudimentary forts in Kettering around five hundred B.C. and from then on it was a race to glory. Within a couple hundred years Kettering would fall under the rule of the ever growing Roman Empire. Kettering was in fact one of Rome's premier iron towns at the time and smelting was big business for the city in a time when many cultures still hadn't harnessed the power of this new form of metal. Pottery kilns can still be seen in the town which means that manufacturing was the trade of the city very early. Other parts of Northamptonshire didn't even begin manufacture goods for another thousand years! Naturally, a large majority of England would fall under Saxon rule in the coming centuries and Kettering was a decidedly Saxon city just like nearly all of its neighbors. It was during this time that Kettering began to show the typical Saxon features like abbeys and castles. Kettering still maintained a healthy respect, though, and this is due to the many wondrous buildings that were erected in the lovely town.
A visitor to Kettering could spend months perusing the many relics from years gone by. The Boughton house, commonly referred to as the "English Versailles" is one of the most beloved pieces of medieval architecture still standing while the one hundred and eighty foot high crocketed spire at the chapel is the perfect photo op. A discerning historian can glean countless facts about one of the greatest uprisings in British history: The Newton Rebellion. Every direction you can turn in presents countless opportunities for enrichment and wonder. Even the more modern works of architecture often offer thrills for anyone who enjoys fascinating bits of history. Is it any wonder that Kettering is often compared to a living, breathing history book?
