Kilmichael

Kilmichael is a very special place to stay. Quality, comfort and style are the hallmarks of the experience. All the rooms are elegantly and individually decorated to retain the look and feel of a particularly attractive country house, while still offering the standards of comfort and service associated with the best hotels.

Indeed, Kilmichael is the only hotel on the island of Arran (and one of the very few in the whole of Scotland) to achieve the 5 Star standard in the Scottish Tourist Board's Grading and Classification scheme, in which 5 star quality means "exceptional, world class".

Kilmichael is a past winner of The Taste of Scotland"Country House Hotel of the Year"Award as well as of the Macmallan 25 Award, which honoured just 25 restaurants in Scotland for being "particularly recommended to the travelling gourmet".

We also feature in the AA's Premier Collection of "Britain's Best Hotels" as a recipient of their Red Star Award. This is "made annually in recognition of excellence within each star rating. A Red Star Award demands consistently outstanding levels of hospitality, service, food and comfort."

And yet, for all these accolades, Kilmichael is much more friendly than formal. We aim to help you relax and to ensure that Kilmichael continues to be "the place to stay and eat and get away from it" on Arran. (Scotland the Best).

It is believed to be the oldest house on the isle of Arran. It is certainly among the richest in its historic associations. Situated in the heart of grounds granted to the forebears of its builders by king Robert the Bruce in 1307, it occupies a spot known to have been inhabited long before that, indeed the name 'Kilmichael' indicates the site of one of the earliest Christian missionary cells, dedicated to St. Michael.

By the middle of the 16th century there were just two principal landowners on the island, the Duke of Hamilton at the castle and the Fullartons of Kilmichael. No doubt to reflect the family's prominence, the estate was improved in Victoria's time by the addition of a lodge with gates and, inside the house, a tiny, private, family chapel.

For all its proud history and its description in the title deeds as a fine Scottish 'Mansion house' it is actually quite small and has a charming intimacy about it which complements these grand associations. Kilmichael House is listed as a building of historic and architectural significance.

The Main House

The Forest Room: A beautiful, spacious room with a large, romantic 4 poster bed. As the name suggests, it looks out onto the forest to the south and east of the house. It has a corner bath (big enough for two) with shower en suite.

The Blue Bedroom: Originally the principal bedroom of the house, this room is elegantly decorated and has a draped double bed as well as a large light bathroom.

The Garden Suite: The private sitting room of this lovely suite, decorated in bright, yellow overlooks the garden through three west facing windows.

The Fullarton Suite: Named for the family who occupied this site from 1307 until 1957, this is an elegant suite, with a private sitting room and double doors to the bedroom, where there is a canopied bed. Decorated tastefully in blues and yellows, it looks out to the lawns at the front of the house and the forest at the rear.

The Stable Court

Just a few yards from the main house, the 18th century stone-built stables have been restored and converted to bedrooms. The are of an exceptionally high standard and beautifully decorated. Each has its own entrance from the landscaped courtyard garden.

The Dovecote: So named because of the dovecotes set into the gable. This beautiful twin room is elegantly decorated in yellow and gold.

The Smithy: Previously used to house the blacksmith's forge, this very elegant room has a mahogany 4 poster bed and views on three sides to the garden court and forest. It is decorated in green and floral chintz.

The Byre Suite: The perfect escape! Completely self contained, this suite has its own sitting room with living flame. The bedroom has a mahogany 4 poster and there is a spa big enough for two in the bathroom. The windows look out to both the courtyard gardens and the forest.
