Kingussie, which is pronounced king-ew-see, and is called Ceann a' Ghiuthsaich, in the Gaelic language, is a small town that is located in the region of Highland in Scotland. It is a settlement in the Highland council ward, and is the capital of the Badenoch district.
Kingussie is close to the A9 road making it very easy to reach by car, and since it is located near various other towns and cities, it is an ideal place for someone visiting while on a business trip, or for someone who wants to get the most out of their vacation.
Kingussie is only 12 miles from Aviemore, 3 miles to Newtonmore, and 42 miles from the famous Inverness. Kingussie partakes in the shinty games which it plays against Newtonmore. The shinty games are also called camanachd, or iomain, in the language of modern Gaelic - the Scottish version of it, is a sport where two teams compete with a ball and with hockey sticks on grass fields.
It is a game that was featured in other parts of the world, but now is mainly played only in Scotland, and in which you need to score goals. It is though to be the forefather of ice hockey, but it has somewhat different rules.
The name of the town - Kingussie, is derived from a Gaelic phrase which means "head of the pine forest".
While visiting the town you can visit the local ruins which are from the early 18th century, and are located in Historic Scotland. Those ruins are open to visitors all the time, and are near the place where the original village - the original settlement of Kingussie was located. It had to be moved due to a nearby river - the river Spey, flooding the area.
While in Kingussie you can enjoy the local sporting events - such as the shinty games, for which Kingussie is famous for - it was entered into the 2005 book of Guinness world records, for being the most successful sporting team in the sport of shinty. The local team won 20 consecutive leagues and were unbeaten for 4 years during the beginning of the 1990s.
The local team still maintains its history by being the champions of the Marine Harvest Premier Division.
While in Kingussie you might want to be prepared for what the town has to offer you transportation wise. Well, the town offers a main railway line that goes through Inverness to Edinburgh, to Glasgow and then continues south. You can reach the local stop of this train from High street - you just need to walk 200 meters and you're there.
You can also take your car and park it in a lay-by and take a hike around the town.
While in the town you can also visit the nearby Highland wildlife park, and the Highland folk museum, which is just 3 miles from Kingussie - the visit is free, so you can take your entire family and enjoy the scenery and the history of Kingussie and its surrounding areas.
