The county of Cumbria often gets a bad rap for being one of the most rural counties in England. While it is true that most of the towns in Cumbria are rather small and uneventful, this comes with the benefit of undeveloped land rather than parking lots and strip malls. In other words, Cumbria is filled to the brim with gorgeous natural beauty that is far and away more impressive than the city skylines that choke most large and populous counties. It is important to remember that many of England's best musicians, painters, and artists came from the county of Cumbria and many of those creative individuals credit the beauty of Cumbria for their respective inspirations. It is with a more appreciative aim, then, that we introduce the gorgeous little burg of Kirkby Stephen. With a lovely view of the River Eden, Kirkby Stephen definitely has the quaint, scenic flavor that makes up the best locales in Cumbria. With a tiny population that is under two thousand, Kirkby Stephen also represents the sparse, rural flavor of this backwoods county.

Kirkby Stephen is home to some downright impressive architecture, though, and some of its offerings trump those on display in many big towns. Chief among these treasures is the famed parish church known locally as the "Cathedral of the Dales". This is in fact the second largest church in Cumbria and many argue that, though it is smaller than the famed church in Kendal, it is easily the more impressive edifice. The church was built in the 1200s but in truth there were actually a couple of churches built on the same plot earlier in the town's history. In 1170 the Norman rulers of the area erected a sizable building where the current church stands and an even older one dating back to the Saxon days once commanded the town's attention.

It is important to remember that, due to Kirkby Stephen's age, it was subject to countless nations and peoples throughout the years. The aforementioned Normans and Saxons most definitely had an influence on the town during their tenure but there are also remnants in Kirkby Stephen of the days when Vikings ran the roost. The Vikings were well known for their adherence to Norse Mythology and in parts of Kirky Stephen one can still find reliefs and sculptures dedicated to the various Norse gods. The church actually holds one of the oldest Viking treasures: A statue dedicated to the mythical god Loki.

Kirkby Stephen does of course have the ubiquitous natural beauty that has been talked about at length by various mediums. The Wild Boar Fell in particular is a ravishing sight to see and watching storm clouds brew along the gorgeous landscape is an awe-inspiring experience. Some parts of the River Eden are also positively breathtaking and one really has to visit Kirkby Stephen to feel the real grandeur. There is a railway only a mile or so from the town, though, and getting to Kirky Stephen has never been easier. So what's your excuse?
