With a population of less than a thousand people, it is not likely that anybody is going to mistake Lairg, located in the Scottish Highlands, for a city like Glasgow or Edinburgh. No, Lairg doesn't command the same level of reverence or respect that the big movers and shakers in Scotland enjoy but it for this exact reason that Lairg triumphs above its larger neighbors in one very important category: Beauty. Lairg's meager population is precisely the reason why it has managed to maintain so much of its natural appeal and its residents wouldn't have it any other way. One look at the town and you'll agree with those that call the place home; the stunning landscape of Lairg is rivaled by very few places in the world.

The Highlands have always been known for their extreme beauty and Lairg definitely has the unique geography of the Highlands as a cornerstone for the immense grandeur of its landscape. There is one thing, however, that sets Lairg apart from its neighbors in the Northern Highlands: The fact that it is not situated on the coast. This allows Lairg to still maintain the beauty of the Highlands while still having an appearance and an identity that can't be duplicated. Lairg is also unique in the fact that it is one of the only towns in the area that has its own railway. Lairg Railway sits right alongside the Far North Line and thus it too enjoys one of the most picturesque views of any railway in the nation. What is truly interesting, though, is the fact that the railway is over one hundred years old and has been operating continuously ever since its inception. When the railway was built in the 1800s, the aim was to increase the population of the Highlands by ensuring that access to and from the area was as easy a venture as possible. The area didn't grow as much as many had hoped but Lairg most assuredly benefited in every way possible from this connection to the rest of the world. Thankfully, though, the railway was one of the only major changes to the geography of the area and it enhanced the beauty of the town rather than detracting from it.

Though Lairg's population is admittedly small, this fact doesn't take into consideration the way the town swells in size each year during the popular sheep auctions. Lairg has been well known for many years for its large sheep business and it is one of the best places to buy sheep in all of Scotland. Each year the town holds several huge sheep auctions that draw in people from all around the country and beyond. These aren't your typical sheep auctions, though. They are instead massive events that are typically the largest in all of Europe. Thus, Lairg does carry a massive amount of importance to people from all around the continent as long as you look in the right circles. It is likely that every town, no matter how large or small, carries this kind of significance to some group and it only requires a deeper look to find out that every town is important in its own way.
