Other accommodation near Lochinver

The town of Lochinver is one of the many quaint, beautiful villages in Scotland that offer some truly spectacular sights. Most of the areas in the Highland Council are small, meager hamlets that eschew urban amenities for the quiet country atmosphere that the Highlands offer in spades. Lochinver, however, makes some of these small towns look like Birmingham due to the fact that the village is only home to about six hundred people. Most of the town is in fact located along a slightly winding road that is backed by a small hill and it is here that you can truly see just how compact this little slice of land is. The town itself only goes back to around fifty or sixty years ago and it was named after a New Zealand sheep station. If this doesn't clue you in to the fact that Lochinver is a tiny little microcosm within the Highlands, nothing will.

Fortunately, there are some things in and around Lochinver that make it a wonderful place to visit, if not a place to live. One of these treasure is the glorious and beautiful Loch Assynt. It is only about eight kilometers from Lochinver and it is one of the most gorgeous fresh water lochs in all of Scotland. It is nearly seventy square kilometers and at its deepest point it reaches depths of over ten kilometers. Clearly this is a large body of water and the River Inver actually flows out of it and runs right through Lochinver. Thus, the name of Lochinver is somewhat incorrectly titled because there is no "Loch Inver", it is simply a river until it reaches the Assynt. There are, however, many smaller lochans within the town and recent estimates puts the tally at over two hundred of these little bodies of water. Not surprisingly, Lochinver is a very popular fishing town. Aside from the lochans that draw fishermen of all kinds each day, many people go out and fish the enormous Assynt. This helps to boost the tourist trade of the town as visitors come in from all around for some peaceful, tranquil fishing in and around the quiet town.

Bird watching is another popular activity that draws holiday vacationers to Lochinver. Near the Assynt there are plenty of unique and lovely species including the hooded crow, the oystercatcher, and even the curlew. There are many special areas that have been set up in Lochinver as nature trails and thus people can be led by guides throughout some of the most beautiful and stunning parts of the surrounding country. Thanks to this tourist income Lochinver is slowly but steadily growing into a larger and more modern town every year. In time it will offer more exciting amenities that will allow it to capture even more tourism and thus it is advised that, if you are planning to visit Lochinver, you pay the town a visit now before it begins to take on the appearance of more typical tourist destinations in Scotland rather than the unique appearance that the town still maintains today.
