The Surrounding Area

The village of Lorton is situated 8 miles from the picturesque town of Keswick being located at the north end of the Lorton Vale, this beautifully pastoral valley linking the high fells of Buttermere with the market town of Cockermouth, which is 4 miles away. The river Cocker runs the full length of the Vale and its fast flowing streams were used between 1770 and 1800 to power flour and linen mills situated in the village.

The complex of buildings either side of Boon Beck bridge started life as a water-powered linen ill but later became the site of a brewery under the ownership of the local Jennings family. Jennings Brewery is now a major firm Cockermouth, having re-located in 1887. Lorton's village hall was once the original brewery malt house. High Mill was once a water powered centre of industry, one of the many mills in this vicinity.

Lorton School was first established in 1809 and is still a thriving school with over 70 pupils. Adjacent to the school we have four tennis courts (2 hard and 2 grass) along with a pavilion and a very active tennis club a lot of Senior and junior members. Guests staying in the village are very welcome to use the courts paying a very nominal sum.

We have the famous Yew Tree of which William Wordsworth wrote a famous poem, William Wordsworth's birth place is in Cockermouth and the house is open to the public and is well worth a visit.

The village hosts a shop, post office and a local pub serving delicious bar food.

There are two private estates in the village, Lorton Park built in the 19th century, with its attractive high garden wall and gateway contains within its grounds a battlement Smoke House used for smoking fish and hams, Lorton Hall stands at Low Lorton and was built around the 15th century.

There are lots of walks around the village and Buttermere and Crummockwater are not far away. The C to C cycle route travels through the village and it is also a very nice cycling area. It is a very quiet peaceful village with many historic connections and is well worth a visit.
