'A warm welcome awaits you at Monkgate Guest House'
The Guest House is run by the owners and has been tastefully renovated to retain much of the original character. Cosy and rambling with a friendly atmosphere.
Monkgate Guest House was originally three cottages built around 1804 for a wood carver and cabinet maker. It is a grade II listed building. We are just outside the ancient city walls of York on Monkgate and well situated for York Minster and the main city area so convenient for business or pleasure.

Apart from the many attractions including the Shambles, The Jorvik Centre and the Railway Museum, to name just a few, you have all the wonderful shops and restaurants at your disposal all within easy walking distance of Monkgate Guest House. Most weeks York is host to an event i.e. The Viking Festival in February or the Food & Drink Festival in September. At Christmas the whole city comes alive with the colourful lights and bustling street fairs. |

All our bedrooms are individually furnished with colour television and tea and coffee making facilities. Our rooms are en-suite or have private facilities. We also have a ground floor bedroom that can be used as a quiet hideaway for a couple or makes a lovely room for a family of four. We request that guests do not smoke as we are a non-smoking guest house. Limited car parking space is available. |
Our dining room is comfortably furnished with a sitting area for you to meet or wait for friends. We serve freshly cooked breakfast on our aga, and also on request a continental breakfast to your room. For dinner there are many excellent restaurants and historic inns all within walking distance. Why not try one of the Ghost Walks at night or take a leisurely stroll along the river embankment calling for an evening drink at one of the hundreds of York's Public Houses.

| Perhaps you could catch one of the tour buses from Monkgate to take you around York and you can hop on and off as you wish. You may wish to venture further afield as you are only a short distance from the North Yorkshire Moors, the seaside resorts of Whitby and Scarborough or the many stately homes including Castle Howard and Beningbrough. If you do not have access to a vehicle, there are many day trips from York that we can help you arrange. |

We are delighted that William was shortlisted by the York Hospitality Association for Best Guest House Person 2006. The Awards Ceremony was held at York University on April 9th. He was up against strong contenders covering York and surrounding area.
On March 19th we attended the York Hospitality Association Awards for Excellence and we were presented jointly with the award "Best Guest house Person". It was awarded for customer care and service and other categories included best chef/kitchen staff, receptionist, tourism volunteer and administrator.
The Association comments about us were "our judges recognise that running a Guest House means you live the job 24/7. You have to stay friendly and polite, be warm and considerate even when you are not feeling like it. Nothing must be too much trouble for your guests. Our winners showed their love and enthusiasm for this job." |
