Newcastle Upon Tyne in Tyne and Wear is commonly known as just "Newcastle". It is located in the upper North-East of England on the river Tyne and it is very close to the North Sea. Thanks to its location it can easily be reached by trains from both London in the South as well as Glasgow and Edinburgh in the North. Thanks to all the local rail lines small towns and cities in the area can also be easily reached. The road system is almost as excellent as the railway service with the A1 stretching from Edinburgh to London. By air one flies into Newcastle Airport which is a mere 10km from the city centre. From here European destinations can easily be reached. For the more adventurous among us the ferry from Newcastle (North Shields) to Amsterdam (Ijmuiden) could be a fun 16hrs long expedition.
The city is famous for its football team that plays its games at St James Park. The stadium is in the heart of the city on a roundabout that is open for normal through traffic around matches which can lead to chaotic congestions. Other landmarks that attract visitors from far and beyond include the Tyne Bridge and the shopping centres in Newcastle of which there are numerous. Eldon Square and the Central Arcade are just a few of them. Metro Centre is the largest indoor shopping centre in Europe. This Metro Centre can be found in Gateshead just a few minutes away from Newcastle.
For those interested in arts and poetry etc Newcastle is a true paradise. Geordies (as people from Newcastle are commonly referred) are known to be very welcoming and friendly people. Newcastle is actually known as the Arts and Galleries and Poetry capital of the UK. This all in a combination called NewcastleGateshead which combines the two neighbors together by name and strength.
The Theatre Royal is host to the season premiere of a performance by the Royal Shakespeare Theatre every year and the Jubilee Theatre, The People's Theatre and The Round are just a few others that will wet your appetite for more cultural experiences. That is a good thing as there is a festival in Newcastle almost every month, with Beer, Jazz, Music, Culture and Environment taking turns to wow the visitors every month.
