| Lechlade-on-Thames is a small bustling rural market town which takes its character from its riverside setting and its old, mellow stone buildings. Known as the Gateway to the Cotswolds, it is within easy reach not only of Bath, Oxford, Cirencester, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Swindon and the motorways, but also of some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain. The New Inn has been the foremost Hotel in Lechlade for more than 250 years, patronised by travellers and poets alike. Legend has it that it was here that Shelley stayed when he visited the town in 1815, and wrote his famous lines on the Churchyard. More recently, the Inn catered for the Prince of Wales, when he attended a concert in July 1992. Once a Coaching Inn during the Regency, the New Inn maintains its reputation for hospitality into the twentieth century. Whether you seek the peace and tranquillity of a weekend break in rural surroundings, or bed and breakfast as part of a business schedule, or simply need a place to sleep during a journey, we can accommodate you. |

| Lechlade A short guide Welcome to today's Lechlade, a gently bustling market town beside the green meadows where the Thames meets the Cotswolds at Ha'penny Bridge, a toll bridge built in 1792. For centuries, the slender spire of Lechlade's 15th century wool church has been the landmark for travellers coming down from the Gloucestershire Wolds, sailing up the River Thames from Oxfordshire, or making their way from the downs of Wiltshire. Once our riverside wharves were busy with barges and coaching inns crowded with merchants, farmers and hauliers. From 1789 a busy canal linked Lechlade to the Severn; long before then, river and road took traffic to London. Today's Lechlade is a centre for Leisure. You will still find a fine choice of hotels, restaurants and pubs; or stay by the river with its open fields where you can picnic, park, moor a boat, and even camp. Come and browse in the many antique shops and craft galleries. Our specialists supply; home baked bread, freshly caught fish and smoked delicacies, souvenirs, Christmas gifts, dolls house minatures, craft pottery, quality cloths and hair and beauty treatment. With its flower shop, groceries, post office and garden centre, Lechlade is still a complete, traditional shopping centre. Now part of the Cotswold Water Park, Lechlade is still the highest navigable point on the Thames and head of the Thames tow path walk. In and around the town you can hire a rowing boat, go sailing or wind surfing and enjoy lake and river fishing. Wild life abounds on the rivers, water meadows and in Nature Reserves nearby. There are superb walks round the town and nearby villages, with their listed Cotswold buildings and old churches. As well as the town's delights, the nationally known local attractions are: Lechlade Trout Farm (Burford Rd), Cotswold Woollen Mill/Museum (Filkins), William Morris's house (Kelmscott), Cotswold Wildlife Park (on the road to Burford). |
