Norfolk is easily among the most impressive and fascinating counties in England. For one, it is filled to the brim with cities that have rich histories. Nearly every scholar will admit that Norfolk is a seemingly endless treasure trove of information and facts about the past. Norfolk is also an indispensable part of Britain. It is the fifth largest county in the nation in terms of size and the seventh largest in terms of population. This fact is a bit misleading, however, since Norfolk is so large. Therefore, North Walsham actually has one of the lowest population densities in the country. The towns are generally small and many of them are downright rural. As such, Norfolk is beautiful and filled with history but many of its towns are, for lack of a better term, a bit dull. Fortunately, the town of North Walsham throws this stereotype to the birds and helps Norfolk to claim a bit more cache among the more crowded counties.

Granted, North Walsham and its population of eleven thousand or so isn't what one would call a metropolis. The town is far from a hamlet, though. It is one of the few market towns that have grown up with the rest of the nation and it is more of a suburban heaven than a rustic hell. There is no shortage of exciting night life like pubs and entertainment venues. What really makes North Walsham special, however, is its exciting history. Rare is the town that is fully immersed in the present yet carries a significant history under its belt. North Walsham accomplishes this feat in spades, though.

North Walsham is home to one of the largest parish churches in the entire country: The Church of St. Nicholas. This church is also the site of one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. A shrine to St. Thomas of Canterbury. This shrine came in the form of a very tall and imposing steeple that was for some time the second tallest in Norfolk. Sadly, it collapsed in the 1700s but it is still very admirable that a ruined shrine still commands so much attention. North Walsham also played a part in the pivotal and harrowing Peasant's Revolt. This was one of the most significant events in the history of the nation if not the entire world. Like many other British revolts, it arose because of high taxes levied by the state. This revolt, however, was the largest in British history and it came to a close when the leaders of the revolt were defeated in the Battle of North Walsham. From then on it was an inevitable slide into defeat. While this is no doubt a bittersweet commemoration, a waystone marks the site where the heroes of the peasants fell. North Walsham is a lot of things to a lot of people but one would be hard pressed to find somebody who doesn't acknowledge the vast importance of the town. As such, it is definitely one of the towns that any self-respecting Briton would be a fool to pass up visiting before the end of his or her life.
