Oban, which is also called An t-Oban in the Scottish version of the Gaelic language, which means The Little Bay, is a resort town that is located in Argyll and Bute, in the council area in Scotland. Oban has a small population of about 8,200 people, but it is still the largest town in the area, and is a big draw for tourists - due to it being surrounded by greenery and because of being next to the water. During the tourism season up to about 25,000 people visit the town.
Oban is next to the Firth of Lorn and has a bay called Oban Bay, due to being next to the water. Almost 10% of the local population still speaks Gaelic, and Oban is near many different places in Scotland, either by water or land.
Oban is also a draw to people interested in the history and architecture of Scotland, due to having various cathedrals, castles and other historical points of attraction.
When visiting Oban - either with your friends and family, you might want to visit the local cultural centres that the town has to offer, despite its small size. Part of those cultural attractions include the Royal National Mod, which is a Gaelic festival that was first held in the area as early as 1892.
The small town of Oban also has a two screen cinema, for people who just want to relax while on vacation, and has been featured in several films.
Other points of interest include the Oban War and Peace museum, which showcases the present and future of Oban by exhibiting and preserving historical objects of interest. There is also a museum in the Oban distillery, which is located next to the seafront. Distilling has been done in the area ever since 1794, when whiskey was produced, but the actual distillery was built afterwards, and serves as an important historical building in the area of Oban.
Also besides the local points of attraction, visitors can also watch or participate in the local sports matches and events. For instance, you may want to watch the local amateur football team - the Oban Saints, play at a small stadium in the area, or you might want to watch the local shinty players. Shinty is thought to be the origin of ice hockey - it resembles ice hockey in both rules and structure, but differs to a certain extent, and is played all over Scotland - it is a very popular game. Shinty was played elsewhere in the past, but now it is mostly played in Scotland, since other types of sports took over.
You can also watch the Oban Cricket Club play nearby, and you can watch matches of the local Oban Lorne Rugby Football Club, which hosts one of the most successful teams in the highlands area.
Other activities you may want to partake in include scuba diving in the local area, or renting a boat and sailing it - either with friends and family, and maybe even fishing in the local area.
