The Griffin Hotel is undoubtedly one of theoldest and most interesting hotels in the Fen County. Originally, it was a private residence dating back some four hundred years. Later, it became Ye Olde Griffin Inne, and during the coaching era was famous for miles around. A legacy of this era is the hotel's main entrance which used to be the coach entrance. Around 1860, the then owner has specially commissioned the exquisite wood carvings from Burma, which are now much admired by visitors.
An interesting announcementwhich appears in the London Gazette of January, 1688, was as follows:
"Taken out of the Griffin Inne Stable The first instant in the town of March Isle of Ely, A brown Gelding, Bob-tailed about 9 years old, 13 Hand High, something low backed, and a small star on his forehead, A little yellow about the eyes, a brown nose with a crack overthwart his off hoof Supposed to be taken away by a tall lusty man with fair hair, full eyed about 24 or 25 years of age. Whoever gives notice either of the man or the horse to Mr Samuel Keeble at the Griffin Inne aforesaid or to Mr Thomas Urdall at the Swan Inne with two necks in Tuttle Street, Westminster shall have a Guinea."
The Griffin Hotel has always been a popular meeting place for local organisations, and provides a large section of the local community with a friendly environment within which to enjoy their social lives.

March is a pleasant market and residential town in the heart of the Fenlands, with excellent social, educational and recreational facilities.
Situated on the banks of the River Nene, it offers superb boating and coarse fishing. With its wide streets and free parking, the town attracts a large number of shoppers from surrounding areas.
With Peterborough only 19 miles away, Wisbech 9 miles, Kings Lynn 21 miles, Downham Market 15 miles, Ely 21 miles and Cambridge 32 miles, and with a regular train service to London's Liverpool Street and Kings Cross stations taking just one and a half hours; the town is both easily accessible, yet sufficiently remote to allow visitors a sense of being away from it all.
