Paignton is a coastal town in Devon that is strongly linked with nearby Torquay and Brixham as together they form Torbay, which is also known as the English Riviera. The 50000 residents have a strong history as Paignton's history can be traced back for almost 950 years. Since 1859 there has been a railway link to London. There is still a connection to London by rail as well as Newton Abbott and Newcastle. A lot of the services only run in the summer months, so it might be wise to check out which services are available to you.
Paignton is now merged with small villages like Goodrington and Preston as it became more and more popular as a seaside resort. It just swallowed up these small villages to become the vibrant, but still pretty small resort town.
Until 1837 there was no sign of this happening, but as the new Harbor act was passed the floodgates where opened and since then Paignton has never looked back. When you reach Paignton you will automatically be drawn to Church Street or Winner Street. These are the historical focal points in the town. During certain times of the year you can visit Kirkham house which is a medieval stone house. You might have heard of Coverdale Towers without ever having seen it as it is named after Bishop Miles Coverdale who, in 1536, published an English translation of the Bible. According to some stories the Bishop lived in the tower, but modern historians doubt these stories. A massive and impressive building is the Oldway House, which was built for Isaac Merritt Singer, who was the man behind the Singer sewing machines.
A lot of buildings in Paignton are unfortunately closed, including the Torbay picture house, which was the favorite cinema for Agatha Christie. All her novels are believed to be around this picture house, when describing cinemas or theatres. The beach is now the main attraction and together with Preston Sands it is the hub of water sport activities like kite surfing and dinghy sailing. Elberry Cove is the location that is in use for jet-ski enthusiasts.
