Penrith is a market town in Cumbria just a few kilometres off the Lake District National Park. It is crossed by the rivers Eamont, Lowther and Petteril. The Thacka Beck, a partially man made watercourse, connects the Eamont and the Petteril. The Thacka Beck was the main water supply for a long time in Penrith.
Penrith is easily reached by the main M6 motorway that runs all the way from London. The A6, the A66 and the A 686 all intersect at the town. The Railway station (which is Penrith North Lakes) is serviced by regular trains from Glasgow, Edinburgh, London, Birmingham and Manchester.
Being a market town the town has two major markets every week. On Tuesdays there is a market on Great Dockray and Cornmarket, which ones a month includes a farmers market on the Market square as well. On Saturdays there is a large market on the Auction Mart. This is alongside the M6 next to J40. It is the largest market in Cumbria and free bus travel is provided from the town centre. Despite that a lot of high street chains have invaded the quaint little town there are still plenty of specialist locals around offering everything from cycling accessories to fresh cut beef.
One of the major attractions in the town is St Andrews Church which was built in an imposing Grecian style around 1721. It incorporates a 13th century tower. South of the town one can find some ancient "Henge" sites which are both protected by "English Heritage" Right in the middle of Penrith there is a clock Tower erected in 1861 dedicated to Philip Musgrave. Just north of town is Beacon Hill which was a signaling hill last used in the war against Napoleon. Intentionally It was used to warn against threats coming from the north (Scotland) but currently Scottish visitors provide a big chunk of the local income.
The social entertainment is mainly provided by the public houses in the town. As with many others of its size and because of the nature of the main occupations (agricultural and related) there is not much need for a night life and the public houses provide plenty of action for the locals. There is, however, a cinema with 2 screens and an adjoining bingo hall.
