Penzance in Cornwall is one of the country's most southwesterly towns. It is located just 8km from the end of the A30 road and just under 500km from London. Despite its remote location it is incredible where trains go to from here. It is possible to take a direct train to London, Reading and Exeter, but also Newcastle, Glasgow and even Dundee. The trips to London take just under 5 ½ hrs while Glasgow can be reached in 10 hrs. From experience I can tell you that the Glasgow journey can be quite relaxing.

With the bus you can reach London in 9 hrs, but this bus will pass London Heathrow Airport first. Via local bus links places like St Ives, St Just and Land's End (the most south western point) can easily be reached. There is a heliport and a ferry service that will each take you to the Isle of Scilly, with the ferry taking nearly 3 hrs and the helicopter less then 30min. From Land's End fixed wing aircrafts can take you to the Isle of Scilly in 15min.

Thanks to conservation laws most of the town is protected from being demolished. There are special planning rules for these buildings and this goes for much of Penzance and the harbor areas of Newlyn and Mousehole. There are Georgian and Regency buildings in Penzance as well as new style buildings with some even as new as 2009.The main street used to be Chapel Street on which you can still find an Egyptian House as well as the Union Hotel, which used to be home to a Georgian theatre. Branwell house is located here, which could be called famous as it used to be the house of the mother of the Bronte sisters. The promenade is by far the most popular attraction and this goes mainly for the Jubilee swimming pool. This is a salt water swimming pool opened in 194, the year of King George V's silver jubilee (hence the name). The rest of the promenade can look desolate at times. One should not forget that Penzance used to get hit by large storms. The last devastating one was in 1962. In the centre of Penzance you can find the statue of Humphry Davy at the Market House. This famous chemist was a resident of Penzance.
