The town of Plockton barely qualifies as a town at all. It has a population that is under five hundred and it is located in the Highland area of Scotland which is more of a scenic county than one known for being highly populated. All the same, Plockton is definitely one of the most beautiful cities in the United Kingdom and much of this has to do with the fact that Plockton is so sparsely inhabited. Everywhere you go in this town is akin to walking through a living, breathing postcard and despite the fact that only about three hundred and fifty people live here on any given day, the truth is that many people come through Plockton each year just to lay eyes on some of the most gorgeous and awe-inspiring scenery ever imagined.
Part of the reason that Plockton is so beautiful is because the town sits on the shore of the lovely and idyllic Loch Carron. Anybody who is familiar with Scotland knows that its lochs are among the most impressive bodies of water on the face of the earth and Loch Carron is no exception to the rule. One can see both the fresh water area where the River Carron enters the loch as well as the point where the loch meets the Atlantic Ocean. In other words, all you need to know about how bodies of water work is contained in this little slice of heaven. Many of the visitors to the Highlands like to stay in Plockton because the city provides a ferry that carries people to an incredibly popular colony of seals that reside not far from the town amid the Loch.
Plockton is also filled with some of the most beautiful old buildings on this side of the United Kingdom. Nearly all of the homes were built in the 1700s or the 1800s and this furthers the feeling that you are in a magical land lost in time whenever you take a look around the town. As mentioned earlier, many tourists come to Plockton to get a pristine view of the Highlands and many television shows and movies have been shot in this picturesque town. The popular series Hamish Macbeth was filmed here as was the cult hit The Wicker Man. The Plockton Inn and the Plockton Hotel are the main homes for the many visitors to the town and each are award-winning destinations.
Though the natural sights are the main draw in Plockton, nearly ever visitor makes a point to stop by and see the famed Duncraig Castle. Built in the 1800s, the Duncraig Castle is defunct and abandoned but tourists are welcome to peruse the interior of the now ruined building. The view of the castle against the imposing horizon of the Highlands is a particularly ravishing photo opportunity but, then again, what isn't worthy of a roll of film in this incredible landscape? Plockton may be a quaint fishing village but the visceral pleasure it evokes every waking second makes it easily among the most significant locations in the entire United Kingdom.
