The town of Port Isaac is often described with the word "picturesque". This is certainly an appropriate term because Port Isaac does indeed have its own unique style that is nothing if not beautiful. It sits right on the Atlantic Coast, offering a stunning beach view that meshes nicely with the equally lovely appearance of Cornwall. As one of the oldest inhabited locations in all of Europe, Cornwall has a stately, ancient beauty that captivates even the most jaded of observers and fills him or her with a sense of timeless bliss. Port Isaac captures this beauty with ease and its view of the coast line makes it even more incredible. But mere visceral beauty wouldn't do for a place like Port Isaac, and it is on this tangent that we find the real meaning behind the town's constant comparison to the "picturesque": Port Isaac has been featured in countless movies and television programs because of its unreal imagery.

The first major production in Port Isaac occurred with the series "Poldark", which aired in the 1970s. From then on many celebrities would visit the town for shooting on various projects throughout the years including "Oscar and Lucinda", "Doc Martin", and "The Nightmare Man". Not surprisingly, many famous entertainers, producers, and more who have visited Port Isaac for work have fallen in love with the town and settled down there permanently, while still others have a summer or winter house in the area. The famous designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen calls Port Isaac home as does the equally popular actress Julie Peasgood.

Interestingly enough, Port Isaac didn't arise because of its beautiful appearance and during its growth it never depended on tourism or entertainment productions as the main source of its income. Instead, the town's growth came about as a result of the curiously un-glamorous trade of corn. The town's original name, Porth Izzick, actually translates into "corn port" in the ancient tongue from which it was created. This fact more than anything else belies the age of Port Isaac and, to be sure, the town is several centuries old. The famed Port Isaac Pier was built during the tenuous reign of none other than Henry VIII. The corn came from the more inland part of Port Isaac but eventually the town would come to depend more on fishing and transport rather than the export of agriculture. Port Isaac was a highly desirable place from which to send and receive cargo and the town was arguably at its peak during the 1800s. These days, of course, the focus is on beauty and relaxation and by all accounts a trip to Port Isaac most certainly provides that. It is important to remember, though, that every "paradise" had to work and strive to earn that title and we must always look back to the past in order to best appreciate our favorite places in the present. Fortunately, a trip to Port Isaac can provide that while still offering thrills and excitement beyond your wildest dreams.
