Other accommodation near Presteigne

The lovely and indispensable town of Presteigne can be seen as something of an entrance point into Wales from England or vice versa. After all, the town sits right near the border of both countries and, along with several other Welsh towns that find themselves so close to the drawing lines, Presteigne is often referred to as the "Gateway to Wales". Presteigne isn't exactly what one would call a big city, however; its population hovers around twenty five hundred people and for most of its life it was little more than a settlement. All the same, Presteigne regularly makes the list of Britain's top ten small towns in many different publications each year.

As mentioned, Presteigne has always been rather on the small side but this has in fact been the main source of the town's undeniable charm ever since its inception. Though its origin is a bit more mysterious than other towns in either Wales or England, most experts surmise that Presteigne came about as an early settlement that was built around a small church and throughout these early years (probably around the 900s) Presteigne was little more than a blip on the radar of the Middle Ages. By the middle of the 1100s, however, Presteigne was noticed by some particularly powerful lords that belonged to the Marcher clan and the town soon saw its fortunes improve vastly.

Sadly, just as Presteigne was finally becoming prosperous and growing into a full-fledged town in the thirteenth century, trouble began to loom on the horizon. The most striking and destructive malady to befall the town came in the form of none other than the famed Black Death, or Bubonic Plague. Europe was positively besieged by the virus during these years and by the end of the various outbreaks the entire continent would lose over a quarter of its population. Presteigne was no exception to this dreadful fate and it was hit particularly hard by the plague. Another terrible problem was in the works too, however. During that time tensions between Wales and England were at a boiling point and the famed Welsh hero Owain Glyndwr was beginning his famed rebellion that would forever be in the history pages. Glyndwr's rebellion eventually failed but he has the distinction of being the last Prince of Wales and he is at the top of every list of the greatest Britons to ever live, even being immortalized in the Shakespeare play Henry IV Part I. No matter what you think of the man, it does have to be said that he caused a massive amount of destruction in some of the towns he visited and Presteigne was just such a town. By the time the 1400s rolled around Presteigne was a struggling burg to say the least. Thankfully, the town bounced back on its feet thanks to an unlikely trade: Clothing. Alas, more plagues would befall the nation in the coming years but the most important thing to remember is that Presteigne is still around. The town has endured some of the hardest times in human history and yet it still stands proudly to this day as a shining beacon to the hardihood of the nation of Wales and the people of the United Kingdom as a whole.
