Prestwick South Ayrshire is located on the southwest coast of Scotland. This busy town is mainly known for its international airport. Many also know it as being the home of the first open golf tournament back in 1860. It might not be a hot spot but there are still things to do during your stay in Prestwick.
One stop to see is the ruins of the old parish church. St Nicholas Church was originally built in the twelfth century. Through the years and neglect all that remains are a few ruins surrounded by a large ancient cemetery. A stroll through the cemetery, however, might net you a glimpse of the tomb of Andrew Strath who was "Keeper of the Green" at the Prestwick Golf Club in 1860. He would have been keeper for the very first open golf tournament ever played. Golf enthusiast might want to check it out.
For those who are golfing enthusiasts, the Prestwick Golf Club is no longer open but Prestwick is still home to two golf clubs. The St. Nicholas Golf club is a more traditional club. Opened in 1851 this classical club is more natural to those who play the game. With the standard eighteen holes players can challenge themselves while taking in magnificent views of the Firth of Clyde.
For the more untraditional, there is St Cuthbert. This golf club boasts over nine dogleg holes, many of which are also of great length. If the dogleg shape doesn't get you then the difficult greens might. These non-traditional greens might have bumps, lumps, and lips to keep you ball from going where you think it should.
Parents, don't worry golf isn't all there is to Prestwick. Prestwick is a seafront town but swimming in the sea might not be the best advice. This area takes the brunt of the force of Gails and other storms so while the water quality is better than expected for such a battered area it's probably not the best. But don't fret you can still take your kids swimming at the local pool. This pool is located off of the mains street and offers not only general swimming but lessons too. Neighboring the pool is the Space place Children's center and an indoor bowling alley. There are also cricket grounds, football pitches, and tennis courts.
However, if you want to take your kids to an outdoor park that will give you a view of the seafront then head over to the Prestwick Park. There are swings and slides for the younger children and climbing frames and a skate park for the older ones. You can watch your children play while you enjoy the beauty of the sea.
Prestwick is the home of golf, airplanes and places for the kids to literally hang out.
