The Perfect Hideaway

Edale is the name give to both the valley between Mam, Tor, Lose Hill and Kinder and to its main settlement. As well as the main village there are several small farming hamlets strung out along the valley.

Barber Booth, Ollerbrook Booth and Nether Booth (the hotel bedrooms are named after the Booths and walks around Edale.) The main village is pretty and timeless, lying just off the main road along Hope Valley. The railway station is situated at the end of the village within walking distance of the Rambler Country House Hotel. The Rambler is a perfect base for sightseeing and adventure is some of the most beautiful parts of the Derbyshire Peak District: Abney, Bamford, Bradwell, Hathersage, Hope and Castleton.

When you arrive at the Rambler Country House Hotel you immediately become aware of several tangible things, the warm welcome from friendly staff, the inviting décor of a comfortable hotel and the informality of a county inn with accommodation to rival any fine hotel.

What you won't see but will feel the benefit of its decades of experience. The Rambler Country House is a hotel managed and staffed by people who care about its guests, whether it's providing a favourite drink or cask ale in our relaxing bar or an up to date weather forecast. Perhaps it's a break from the hustle and bustle or a planned activity break the Ramblers excellent room facilities will ensure convenience and comfort is the part of every stay.

Walking - There are many excellent walks in and around Edale. A pleasant easy circuit would be to start from Edale Village, follow the Pennine Way for about 200 meters and then branch off right to climb up Grindslow Knoll. Follow the edge round to Grindslow Brook, cross it and continue to Ringing Roger. Alternatively you could follow the Pennine Way to Jacob's Ladder and Kinder Low and then return around the southern edge of the Kinder Scout Plateau. This longer walk passes the eroded rock formations know as the Woolpacks.

Cycling - Edale has an obvious attraction for Cyclists/Mountain bikers at all levels. There are several excellent circuits for the bikers starting and finishing in the valley. One typical circuit is to cycle around Win Hill, which guards the eastern entrance to Edale Valley, taking in the Roman road past Hope Cross and traversing down the western side of Ladybower reservoir. Another popular circuit is to take the old bridle path over Jacob's Ladder to Hayfield and return via the bridle path which passes Mount Famine and Rushup Edge.

Climbing - there is some excellent climbing on the edges which flank Kinder Scout, such as Nether Tow, The Pagoda and Ashop Edge. However, most of these edges are high so climbing on them tends only to be feasible in spells of good weather. Fortunately, Edale is surrounded by a whole range of other gritstone edges, all within easy reach and mostly at a lower altitude than those on Kinder. The limestone climbing of the White Peak is not far away either.

Hang Gliding - Mam Tow which overlooks the Edale Valley from the South is the major local centre for hang gliding and paragliding. This hill and nearby Rushup Edge have slopes which face north, south and east so it is possible to take off from there almost whatever the wind direction. Taking off near Mam Tor on any suitable day you see numerous hang-gliders and paragliders in the air over the southern edge of the Edale Valley.

Much More - Edale and the Surrounding area has famous caving, fishing and miles and miles for horse and pony trekking.
