Other accommodation near Redruth

With a population of over twelve thousand people, Redruth is easily among the largest and most crowded parts of the county of Cornwall. Cornwall is one of the most historically significant towns in the United Kingdom and many of the most integral parts of the nation's past have occurred right within the storied county. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, Cornwall can sometimes be a bit dull for anybody who isn't interested in history. After all, many of the towns in Cornwall have populations of around two thousand or so and there is little to do in these hamlets and villages aside from looking at ancient castles and such. While such activity is no doubt incredible for purveyors of Britain's past, it comes at the cost of cultural amenities that are traditionally found in larger towns. Fortunately, Redruth strikes the perfect balance between ancient wonder and modern day splendor and anybody who visits the town, whether their interests lie in the past or in the present, will find much to love.

For much of its early life Redruth was of little regard to the nation, though. It was a small, quaint market town that was often overshadowed by other towns in Cornwall. The town may have always had this fate were it not for a particularly fruitful discovery in the earth of Redruth: Copper. In hindsight it shouldn't have been too surprising that there was a wealth of copper ore in Redruth. After all, the town earned its name because of the red color that graces the soil and rock in the town. Once the copper was discovered in Redruth the town forever changed from a no-account hamlet into a flourishing city. This occurred during the 1700s when the Industrial Revolution was poised to change the face of the world and thus the timing couldn't have been more perfect. Since brass was a downright necessary metal for the Revolution, Redruth saw its fortunes explode dramatically and it became one of the richest mining areas in the entire United Kingdom.

To this day there are still remnants of this radical time in the history of Redruth. A statue of a Cornish miner, appropriately made of bronze, stands on the corner of Fore Street and, with its pedestal, towers over the passersby at a height of twelve feet. Unfortunately, the mining industry, particularly that of copper, went into a steep decline by the end of the 1800s and the very last mine in Redruth was closed down in 1998. Nowadays Redruth earns most of its income through commerce thanks to the many fine shops located in the city. Though the glory days of the copper mines are long gone, Redruth is still a beautiful and wonderful town both to visit and to live in and it is reassuring to know that the town pays due homage to the trade that allowed it to evolve from a meager hamlet into a full-fledged borough filled to the brim with exciting activities and lovely people.
