The town of Ringwood is the perfect example of the quaint, adorable culture that makes up the average English town in general and the average Hampshire town in particular. Granted, Ringwood is a bit younger than many towns in England but this is a hard thing to avoid when you're a country that has been inhabited since the days of cave men. At any rate, Ringwood truly came into being in the 1600s. This is notably younger than quite a few cities in the United Kingdom, considering that many of them were first named by the Roman Empire during its dying throes. The truth about most of these towns, though, is that they were hardly "English" in the greater sense of the term for most of their early existence. These towns traded hands between Romans, Danes, Saxons, and even Vikings in some places. Once a town had a weekly market square it was truly considered to be part of England's throne and, though there are towns that held market squares as early as the 1100s and 1200s, many didn't become part of the Crown until around the time of Ringwood's birth. As such, one might even argue that Ringwood is a notably more English town than most of the others simply because it hasn't been diluted in any way. |
