Other accommodation near Rochdale

The town of Rochdale is easily among the largest and most important locations in the entire United Kingdom, to say nothing of the county of Lancashire. Its population is over one hundred thousand but this figure can be a bit misleading. The population tally only accounts for Rochdale proper. If one were to include the smaller suburbs that are typically considered a part of the city a more appropriate figure of over two hundred thousand for the greater borough of Rochdale would be the end result.

Rochdale wasn't always such a large and thriving burg, however. When it was first spoken of in the Domesday Book in the eleventh century there wasn't much going on in the town but those that had foresight likely knew that Rochdale was on its way to glory. It began to become appealing to people in high places once its presence was known and such luminaries as John Byron and John Bright bought houses in the burgeoning community. Eventually the town truly came into its own when it was realized that Rochdale was one of the premier towns for spinning cotton. This happened to coincide with the advent of one of the most important eras in the history of the world: The Industrial Revolution.

Like Birmingham and other enormous industry towns, Rochdale saw its fortunes explode nearly overnight and within no time Rochdale went from a small but growing town into a massive city. During the 1800s Rochdale became a mill town known for its textile production and it was one of the first industry towns of this exciting and bold new age. It helped that the famed Rochdale Canal was one of the largest and most easy to navigate canals in England at the time and this allowed plenty of transport vessels to come to and from the city, aiding in the growth of Rochdale in a great way. The popularity of cotton spinning in these days could not be understated but it was to be short lived.

Rochdale's dependence on the cotton spinning trade was not enough to keep the city thriving by the time the twentieth century came around but luckily enough growth and prominence had arisen in the town during the glory days that it would never again be referred to as a small town. These days Rochdale depends on more traditional areas of commerce rather than industry and it remains a beloved and important town. It is considered one of the more important political towns and many famous liberals have come from the town and many more work and thrive there to this day. It is also home to many famous musicians including Dean Butterworth and Gracie Fields. This harmony between politics and the arts is the perfect example of the way that Rochdale is able to bring pleasure to everybody no matter what their background may be. Few towns are as unique as Rochdale and even fewer have managed to be important throughout their entire history. As such, Rochdale is one of the greatest treasures in the entire United Kingdom.
