Little over three hours journey from London lies the county of Montgomeryshire in the middle of the ancient kingdom of Wales.

Royal Oak Hotel, Welshpool, Front of Hotel

At the gateway to the county Welshpool, an historic border town is situated in the beautiful upper Severn Valley. The rolling green countryside is dotted with sheep, castles and pretty timber framed houses built years ago from the famous Montgomeryshire oak said to have been the backbone of the early English Navy.

Dominating the town is Powis Castle, which has commanded the region for almost 500 years.

Once owned by the Earls of Powis, the Royal Oak Hotel and Restaurant has provided the best fare, ales, comfort and good cheer to local and travelling folk for over 350 years.

Every Monday the ancient Welsh language can be heard at the largest one day sheep market in Europe. Nearby, time has been kind to some of the relics of an industrial past. Victorian working railways and canals are part of the scene, along with hills and deep valleys, still home to many creatures that traditionally lie in peace in the countryside.
