The picturesque village of Aultbea (Gaelic for "The Burn of the Birches"), lies strung out along a sheltered bay overlooking the Isle of Ewe.
Loch Ewe was a hive of activity during World War II, when it was an assembly point for ships on convoy to Russia.
Aultbea is an excellent base for hill walking, bird watching, loch fishing or just taking it easy.
In the village there are two well stocked shops. There are also two hotels, a post office and a filling station within walking distance. |

A few miles north of Aultbea lie the white sandy beaches of Mellon Udrigle and Gruinard Bay. You can spend the long summer days lounging on the beach or swimming in the clear waters.
Poolewe is six miles south and there you will find an indoor swimming pool and the famous Inverewe Gardens, where sub-tropical plants survive under the warming influence of the Gulf Stream.
The village of Gairloch with its award winning Heritage Museum, golf course, sea fishing and whale and porpoise observation cruises, is twelve miles to the south. |
