Hope Bowdler
This is a small village with an interesting history situated among the South Shropshire Hills. There is wonderful walking on the Hope Bowdler Hills along footpaths you can follow in complete tranquillity. A favourite walk is to the village of Cardington with its 15th Century Inn where you can stop for real ale and home cooked food using local recipes.

The market town of Church Stretton nestles in the heart of the South Shropshire Hills. A good shopping place with friendly shopkeepers, cheerful waitresses, a variety of small shops, cafes and pubs. From here it is possible to walk up onto the Longmynd or meander up the Carding Mill Valley. A huge variety of long or short walks, with the chance to see lots of wildlife, start from here. |
Around and About Shropshire
The undiscovered county
There are 100's of places to go during your stay. Here are a few ideas to tempt you out and about. |
| Shrewsbury to the north is famous for its medieval buildings and shuts (pedestrian passages). The river almost circles the town which has good shopping facilities, museums and a castle. | |
The town is the home of the Shrewsbury Quest where you can follow a trail of clues to solve one of Brother Cadfael's 12th century mysteries. Nearby is the imposing Abbey where the stories were set. |
Ludlow, a medieval market town to the south, is dominated by the ruins of its castle, but you will have to search for its impressive church which seem to hide once you are in the town.
 | Add a good market and a collection of antique shops and you've got a recipe for a great day out. Use the car if you must or catch the train from Church Stretton. |
|
| As you drive along the A4371, stop at the car park on the Wenlock Edge. Admire the view, and then take a walk along this wooded escarpment, looking out for fossils as you go. Now owned by the National Trust, the paths are well maintained. Leave time for tea and a browse around Much Wenlock, with Priory, pottery and quaint streets. |
Stokesay Castlea short train ride southwards from Church Stretton, is a wonderful example of an ancient manor house. Now under the management of English Heritage it is open to the public all year round.| For the energetic it is possible to walk back to Hope Bowdler, making a really good day without using the car. The faint hearted could catch the train back. | |

 | The Wernlas Collection is a short drive from Stokesay, gives a fascinating insight into the huge variety of hens. If hens aren't your thing visit anyway, take picnic and enjoy the views. You never know, you may be converted! |
