Shanklin is also famous for being a lodging place for the American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, which stayed at the then Crab Inn at the Old Village part of Shanklin. The American poet wrote a poem about his visit to Shanklin, which was placed on a stone by a nearby bar.
