Sheffield in South Yorkshire is in the northern heart of England. Historically located in East Yorkshire, its half a million residents can now proclaim to be from south Yorkshire. The most common nickname for the city is "steel City". The city has earned its nickname in the industrial revolution when the steel production here went through the roof and the population increased by a factor of 10. There could, however, be cause to change the nickname to "Green City" as Sheffield has more trees per person than ANY other city in Europe. More than 50% of the city is green and open.

The roads are very good in this area as the M1 runs right past Sheffield linking it to London and Leeds while the other motorways link it to the airports nearby.

The closest international airport to Sheffield is Doncaster Sheffield Airport, which is located 29 km from the city centre. The airport opened in 2005 and is served mainly by budget airlines. It handles about one million passengers a year. Leeds Bradford International Airport and East Midlands Airport: Nottingham, Leicester, Derby lie within one hour's drive of the city, and Manchester Airport is connected to Sheffield by a direct train every hour.

There are plenty of things to see in Sheffield including a trip to the theatre at either the Lyceum theatre or the Crucible (also known for the Snooker world championships held here every year). together they form the largest theatre complex outside of London. If you are looking for arts and crafts exhibits than a visit to the Millennium Galleries should be high on your list. Other museums and collections include the Sheffield Fire and Police Museum and the Weston Park Museum. For even more peace and quiet a visit to the Sheffield Winter Gardens might do the trick. There is also an animal collection on display in Graves Park that visitors can visit. There are no noticeable old (pre 19th century) buildings in the city and there only 5 Grade 1 listed buildings in the city, but the new architecture makes up for that as modern architecture is very impressive here in Sheffield. The Arts Tower at the U of Sheffield Campus is one of these examples.
