Swanage Dorset with its sandy beaches and beautiful gardens is a popular resort town. In 877 a naval victory was one in its bay over the Danes by King Alfred. By 1977 the bay had become a sandy haven for beach goers to sunbathe and sail. Excluding the Peveril Ledge where swimming and sailing are not recommended due to the tidal race there. The sea near Ballard Cliff is a treacherous place and should be avoided. Boats can be rented at the pier for deep sea fishing trips or you can simply fish right from the pier. This is a variety of fish to catch including flounder, sole, bass and mackerel You can also get windsurfing lessons or attend a class at one of the oldest diving schools.

After is was declared and obstruction by the Metropolitan Police the Wellington Clock Tower was removed from the southern approach to the London Bridge. It was transported to Swanage in 1867. The town hall that was constructed in 1883 was also originally part of a building in London with its facade being the front of the Mercers Halls. The oldest building located in Swanage is the parish church St. Mary the Virgin that was built in the 13th century. Practically next door the Old Tithe Barn Museum is home to a variety of relics from the town's history.

Durlston Country Park. Studland Bay and Ballard Down are a few of the areas interesting places to visit. There is great family camping opportunities at Cerston Caravan and Camp Site set in the countryside and still near the beaches and the downtown area of Swanage. You can reach the beach in fifteen minutes by walking. This camping area is very safe for visitors of all ages. There are many motor home areas that have full features that include electric hook ups, drainage and cold water to drink. The areas will fit the largest of motor homes as well single or double axle caravans. While the main income of the town comes from tourism it is a seasonal income so may of the residence have to commute to towns close by to find permanent full time jobs.
