The lovely little burgh of Tain is one of the unsung treasures in Scotland's sizable tally of gorgeous cities. Located in the historically beautiful Highlands region, Tain is endowed with the natural splendor of Scotland's many rolling hills and lochs and a trip through the small town is likely to give you a neck ache from all the head turning you'll do trying to see the many fantastic sights.

Tain is actually the oldest Royal Burgh in all of Scotland, having been given its charter in 1066. The city was thought of as a "sanctuary" of sorts where people could use the entire town in the same way that people use a church for protection from the law. This mindset is still a large part of the town today and it is just one of many traditions that Tain adheres to with the utmost respect. There was once a magnificent chapel in the city that dated back to the 600s or possibly even earlier and it was built upon the birthplace of the famed Christian Saint Ducath. It wasn't until the 1400s that Ducath officially became a saint and after that Tain shot into prominence thanks to all the pilgrims that came to what was at the time the most important pilgrimage site in Scotland. Even King James IV would come at least once a year to pay homage to the famed Saint.

Tain's natural beauty has been spoken of in countless tomes but the most popular spot for scenic viewing is most likely the famed "million dollar view". To see this view you simply head southwest from Tain on the A836 road. There you'll see a wide swath of land where Sutherlandshire meets Dornoch Firth. This landscape is immensely beautiful and many people visit Tain simply to see this slice of Scotland unimpeded. Also of interest to tourists are the many gorgeous castles that can be seen all over Tain. The Carbisdale Castle is particularly beautiful and it has recently been renovated into a youth hostel which is both a good and a bad thing; it is good because now people can see the interior and sleep in a piece of history but it is also troubling to know that something so old and historic has been altered to accommodate modern travelers. Dunrobin Castle is a better place to visit, then, because of the fact that it hasn't been altered and it is still open to the public. No matter where you go in Tain, though, you'll be struck with the awe-inspiring wonder of the town. This has been the description of Tain for countless centuries and it seems like it will describe Tain for years to come as well.
